Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery is a cosmetic procedure to correct the appearance of the upper lids, lower lids or both. Blepharoplasty is combination of Greek words “Blepharon” which means Eyelid and “Plassein” means to Form.
Eyes are considered to be the most attractive part of our face and also said to exhibit the first sign of ageing or any type of stress. This aesthetic procedure thus helps in removing excess drooping skin, muscle and fat located near the eyelids which can change the appearance of face and makes you look younger.
Drooping eyelids also known as Blepharoptosis or Ptosis often affect one or both eyes and can cause obstruction in vision if left unattended. It is broadly classified into 2 types :
One is Congenital Ptosis which is caused due to inappropriate development of eyelid muscle whereas the other one is Acquired Ptosis which happens when muscle of eyelid gets weak or thin.
Drooping or Ptosis can be further classified as follows :
You can consider this surgery for yourself if:
Initially, you would need to undergo pre-operative investigations to check if you are physically fit for surgery. Your mental fitness shall also be evaluated by the surgeon during your face to face consultation. This procedure takes around two hours to complete and is usually done on OPD basis.
Throughout the surgical procedure, you will be given local anaesthesia on eye where surgery has to be performed. Depending on your requirement of eyelid (upper eyelid or Lower or both), the surgeon shall plan the procedure. If both eyelids surgery is required then surgeon will choose to perform on upper eyelid first. He will make an incisions beside the natural fold of your eyelid, which will be just above the eyelashes. The surgeon then cuts or removes the drooping skin, excess fat and muscle. Then the incisions will be closed with the help of fine sutures. On the other hand for lower eyelid, the surgeon will make an incision on the natural crease of the lid. After which the excess skin, fats and muscles will be removed and the incisions will be closed with stitches.
Feedback from many people for Eyelid Surgery is satisfactory, such as a more relaxed and young look and more self-confident feeling. Results of Blepharoplasty may last for lifetime.
After surgery, swelling and pain will be there for couple of weeks but it will be reduced and shall gradually subside in some days. The surgical scars may take months to fade away completely. You would need to protect your delicate eyelid skin from too much of sun contact, should wear sunglasses.
