Lithotripsy is a medical procedure used to treat certain types of kidney stones and stones in other organs, such as your gallbladder or liver. Lithotripsy is a procedure that uses shock waves to break up stones in the kidney, bladder, or ureter (tube that carries urine from your kidneys to your bladder). After the procedure, the tiny pieces of stones pass out of your body through your urine.

Kidney stones occur when minerals and other substances in your urine crystallize in your kidneys, forming solid masses, or stones. These may consist of small, sharp-edged crystals or smoother, heavier formations that resemble polished river rocks. They usually exits from your body naturally during urination. However, sometimes your body can’t pass larger formations through urination. This can lead to kidney damage. People with kidney stones may experience bleeding, severe pain, or urinary tract infections. When stones begin to cause these types of problems, your doctor may suggest lithotripsy.

Indication for Lithotripsy

Lithotripsy is the procedure which is usually done in the conditions like kidney stones, gall bladder stones and ureter stones. So, if you are facing the following health issues due to stones then lithotripsy can be an option for you.

  • Very severe pain in abdomen that a person cannot sit comfortably.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Fever and chills.
  • Blood in your urine.
  • Difficulty passing urine.

Types of Lithotripsy

There are two major type of Lithotripsy. The type of procedure always depends on the size, shape and location of the stones. The aim of both these procedures is to eliminate the stones efficiently. These are:

  • Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL)
  • Laser Lithotripsy also known as Flexible ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy (FURSL)

  • ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy) :

In this procedure the shock waves are used to break the stones. A surgeon uses a tool called lithotripter to target sound waves directly at the stones through the body. Due to the high frequency sound waves, the stones are broken into pieces. This is later washed out through urination gradually. The waves used during this procedure are safe and does not harm the other parts like bone, skin or muscle.
This procedure is performed on a day care basis and it takes around 1 hour to complete.

  • FURSL (Flexible Ureteroscopy and Laser Lithotripsy) :

In this procedure the stones in the ureter are treated by using an endoscope. Endoscope is a flexible tube with a light and camera that helps a doctor see inside an organ or body cavity. This helps the doctor to see the stones through endoscope and with the help of laser, the stones are broken into pieces. The broken stone fragments should pass easily through urine in the days and weeks following the procedure.
This is also a day care procedure, which takes about 30 minutes to complete and the patient can be discharged on the same day.

Are you a Candidate?

Usually the kidney stone may not cause the symptoms until the stone moves around or within the kidney part or passes to the ureter. If the person senses the below symptoms then (he/she) may be a candidate for lithotripsy.

  • Severe pain around the flanks and back, below the ribs.
  • Pain that comes in waves and fluctuates in intensity.
  • Pain that radiates to the lower abdomen and groin and pain during urination.
  • Pink, red, cloudy or foul - smelling urine or brown urine.
  • Persistent urge to urinate.
  • Nausea and Vomiting.
  • Urinating more often than usual and small amount of urination.
  • Fever and chills if an infection is present.

Post treatment, the recovery is usually fast and patient can walk around the same day. Many people can fully resume daily activities within one to two days. Special diets are not required, but drinking plenty of water helps the stone fragments pass. For several weeks, patient may pass stone fragments.
